International Day of Older Persons
October 1st is the International Day of Older Persons which is championed by the United Nations and many other age-related organisations who promote the celebration of the contribution made by our senior population. It is a day to give thanks and recognise the issues faced by senior citizens here in the UK and around the world.
The global population is ageing. In the next decade, there will be moreover 50’s in the workplace than those under thirty (source: Age UK). The UN says that almost 700 million people are now over the age of 60. By 2050, 2 billion people, which is over 20 per cent of the world’s population, will be 60 or older. This means that for the first time in human history there will be more people over 60 than children. This will present a different set of challenges for care and the need to break down stereotypes around ageing.
